Digitalisation today is not entirely sustainable. Its industry uses enormous amounts of both energy and materials and generates an enormous excess of waste. Some say that the digital world warms the planet more than all civil aviation combined, and with exponential growth. On the other hand, the digital revolution has transformed and continues to condition the way we live, offering solutions but also increasing some risks to different aspects of our lives, both individual and collective.

The digital revolution and the climate emergency are probably the two most transformative forces at play globally, and therefore two immediate challenges for humanity. However, the nature of the problems emanating from each are radically different, for while the digital revolution needs to be addressed, climate change is a phenomenon that needs to be curbed sooner rather than later. The two issues separately are the focus of research, debate and reflection. However, little is said about technology and the digital world from a climate perspective, as the relationship is complex and little explored.
